Lingo
To those who are unaccustomed to the MMORPG world some of our lingo might be a bit, uh, weird (I’m just being honest guys). I’ve provided this little dictionary to offer some insight into what some of our words, phrases, and abbreviations mean.
- Corpse Camping
- In many MMO’s, when your character dies she experiences an out of body experience or loses their possessions. This either makes it difficult or impossible to continue playing until she has retrieved her possessions (including her corpse). In games that allow PvP (see: PvP below) some players resort to a usually frowned upon practice where they loiter (“camp”) around another player’s body. In most games when she “resurrects” or claims her items she is weakened from the death and thus easily killed. A corpse camper repeatedly kills her as she attempts to return to her body each time. In some extreme cases for hours prohibiting further progress in the game. Similar to Spawn Camping (see Spawning), a form of Griefing.
- Griefing
- There are many different definitions for griefing amongst MMO’s. Some forms of griefing are considered bad etiquette whilst others are bannable offenses. Griefing is generally inhibiting another player’s progress in an area of the game. Whether it be obstructing use of a quest giver, mailbox, or other intractable object; corpse or spawn camping (esp. low level characters); or killing quest mobs simply to prohibit completion of a quest that the offender doesn’t need. Griefing shouldn’t be confused with aggressive PvP playing styles which, although are frustrating, are generally a part of the game.
- Spawn
- the point or action of re-entering the game world after a characters death or zoning to a new area. A spawn point is the specific location the mob or player appears (or “spawns”) into the game world (saying simply “spawn” without “point” is sometimes appropriate). Spawn camping is loitering in wait (“camping”) at a spawn point in hopes of killing a player as they spawn. This is frowned upon in most games as a player is usually disoriented or loading when they spawn and thus unable to defend or prepare themselves. Spawn points and spawn camping are terminology often used in PvP.
