The other day, I was waiting in Orgrimmar for a dungeon queue to pop, and was watching trade chat for its entertainment value. The topic of nerfing came up, something about how some classes had been able to dodge the nerf bat (nerfing = downgrading certain abilities of classes or monsters.

(Nerf bat = the theoretical object by which the developers bring about nerfing. Both of these terms are generally well-known in the MMO world).

Naturally, my mind went to tanking, where dodging tends to be important to survival, so I posted in trade,

“Looking for raid for nerf bat encounter.”

About two seconds later I get a whisper from someone who asked me, “What is that?”

“It’s a joke.”

I then explained the definition of nerf bat.

“Where is it at? Like, where do you go to fight it?”

“It’s not actually an in-game encounter…”

“Oh! lol. The new druid form is a bat.”

“…”
